Hey,

Is there a way to get around the copy protection of a VHS tape that we want
to transfer to DVD using a DVD recorder? My DVD recorder just refuses to
record saying the material is protected...

It pisses me off that I cannot transfert *My* tapes that *I* bought on
DVDs...

Unusual. I suspect something else is wrong.

Not unusual, about half of my VHS tapes will not copy to DVD.

I could understand if the macro-crap made for poor copies but he says "My
DVD recorder just refuses to
record saying the material is protected". Does the DVD burner 'detect' the
Macrovision?

Anyway, I bought a 'box' at the local drugstore which lets me copy any tapes
fine.

Some dvd recorders can be upgraded via a CD to handle copy protected VHS
tapes.
This is how the manufurers upgrade their products.
I bought a LITEON 5005 and searched around the web and found out how to
modify it via this method.

Search around, your dvd player may be upgrade capable.

It's probably your video card that detects it. I have an ATI all-in-wonder
and it detects and will not allow recording of copy protected dvd's or
tapes. I downloaded a free program which takes care of the DVD's. (except
for dual layer. I do not have a dual layer burner.)
I have been looking at digital video stabilizer for $35 which you put
between your VHS player and your computer which is suppose to take care of
the macrovision protection. Have not got it yet so do not know how well it
works.
You might check here for help.

The video 'stabilizer' or 'enhancer' should do the trick with most
MacroVision protected stuff - just insert it in the video line between your
VCR and DVD recorder. You don't need to do anything with the audio signals.

I have an older video card that does not have capturing available on it.
Would a unit like ADS Technologies' DVD Xpress or Instant DVD 2.0 take care
of the Macrovision protection as well? Thanks.
